A member of the Apiaceae family, Saposhnikovia Divaricata (Fang Feng) is esteemed as a superior herb in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing. With its pungent and sweet flavor, warm nature, and non-toxic properties, it enters the lung, spleen, and stomach meridians and is primarily used to dispel wind. As Chen Xiuyuan observed, “Fang Feng is aromatic and warm—imbued with the energy of spring and entering the liver; its sweet, non-toxic taste, reflecting the flavor of the earth, enters the spleen.” It excels in releasing the exterior and dispersing dampness by combining both pungent and moisturizing qualities. Although some mistakenly regard it as a drying agent, Fang Feng is in fact a rare herb that both dissipates dampness and nourishes.
