Derived from a leguminous plant, Sophora flavescens (Kushen) is traditionally used to resolve Qi stagnation in the heart and abdomen. With a bitter flavor and cold nature, it helps to clear heat, drain excess fluids, tonify the middle burner, and improve vision while reducing tearfulness. Entering the heart, spleen, and kidney meridians, Sophora flavescens is effective at clearing heat and drying dampness, and is often employed in formulas addressing eczema and itching. However, due to its potent bitter and cold properties, it must be used judiciously with careful attention to purpose and dosage.
