According to the Ben Cao Gang Mu, wild oats—so named because finches were observed feeding on them—belong to the Poaceae family and possess a sweet, neutral character that benefits Qi and calms the heart. Entering the lung and stomach meridians, oats are prized for their nourishing and moisturizing effects, as well as their ability to support spleen function and restore internal balance. Externally, oat extracts are used to soothe dry and sensitive skin and improve the skin barrier. Oats are available in two main forms—husked oats and naked oats—each offering a distinct texture, with the former providing a smoother feel and the latter a slightly more astringent sensation.
